The Entrepreneurial Exchange

Entrepreneurs Prepare For Awards Battle

The shortlist for Scotland's prestigious Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year award has been announced.

ClinTec chief executive Dr Rabinder Buttar, James Miller of Abermed and Fake Bake owner Sandra McClumpha will compete for the The Entrepreneurial Exchange title.

Buttar is the founder of the contract research organisation which now operates in more than 30 countries.

She believes the Glasgow company is on course to reach revenues of around £50million in the coming years.

There are also plans to launch a new pharmaceutical spin-off Caledonia Pharma focusing on oncology drugs. At Abermed, Miller led a management buyout of the company in 2005 and is currently the managing director.

Originally founded in 1983 to provide health services to the oil and gas sector, it is now one of the biggest occupational health businesses in the UK operating from seven locations.

In June, the company increased its global presence by buying a 65 per cent share in Kazanada, a medical care company in Kazakhstan, which provides a platform for expansion into the former Soviet Union states.

In 2001, McClumpha sold the beauty salon she ran to buy the licence to sell Fake Bake tanning products in the UK and Europe. Then earlier this year she bought the rights to the product from the US founders to take control of distribution in America.

That deal, which saw McClumpha become the single biggest shareholder in the enlarged group, will help take the Stirling company to global sales of more than £10m. The product is available in salons around the country and a select number of retailers including Harrods, Harvey Nichols, John Lewis, Debenhams and House of Fraser.

Judges include John Anderson, chief executive of The Entrepreneurial Exchange, Jim Boyle, head of the entrepreneurial business team at Deloitte, Martin Lightbody, chief executive of Finsbury Foods Group, and Scotnursing Chief Executive Ann Rushforth.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony to be held in Glasgow Hilton on November 27.
