Richard was born in Glasgow and founded his first company DX Communications in 1991. Today he owns and operates a number of mobile telecom and consumer electronic companies in the UK and mainland Europe, with activities including retail (circa 500 stores), recycling and insurance. His Dutch company Dexcom Holdings N.V. has grown revenues from €5m to in excess of €500m in the last 8 years and now employs over 2000 people. In addition he is also actively involved in commercial property investment in the UK and in a number of charitable activities including a programme where disused mobile telephones and telecom equipment from the European market can be refurbished and supplied to developing countries.

Sir Tom founded West Coast Capital (West Coast), the private equity partnership, in March 2001 and the venture philanthropy, The Hunter Foundation in 1998. Prior to which he sold sports retailer, Sports Division, the business he developed from start-up for £290m. Sir Tom has been a long time supporter of Enterprise and Entrepreneurialism and has been a main board director of PSYBT amongst several other directorships.

In 2005 he was Knighted for services to entrepreneurship and philanthropy.   In the same year he founded the Clinton Hunter Development Initiative with former President Bill Clinton to develop and deliver a sustainable model for poverty alleviation in Africa.
