Sir Ian Wood, CBE, BSc., LL.D, DBA, DTech, CBIM, Fscotvec, FCIB

Chairman, John Wood Group plc (http://www.woodgroup.com/). Born and educated in Aberdeen, Ian Wood graduated from Aberdeen University in 1964 with a First Class Honours Degree in Psychology.

Chairman and Chief Executive since January 1982 and Chairman since January 2007.   Chairman of the Nomination Committee. Chairman of J W Holdings Limited, one of Scotland's larger fishing groups, a past member of PILOT, the joint UK government/industry oil & gas leadership group, immediate past Co-Chair of the UK Oil & Gas Industry Leadership Team and Chancellor of Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen.  Age 65.

As well as his commitment to the Group, Sir Ian holds many appointments within the UK including Chancellor of The Robert Gordon University since 2004; and member of the Scottish Sea Fisheries Council since 2007.  He has recently retired from membership of PILOT (joint Government/Oil & Gas Industry Initiative) and joint Chairman of the Oil and Gas Industry Leadership Team.

In December 2000 he retired as Chairman of Scottish Enterprise and as Chairman of the British Trade International Oil & Gas Export Board (previously OSO).

He received the award for Young Scottish Businessman of the Year in 1979, was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1982 in the New Year's Honours List, awarded an Honorary Degree of LL.D from Aberdeen University in 1984 and was awarded a Knighthood in the 1994 New Year's Honours List.  In 1998 he was awarded an Honorary Degree of DBA from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen.

He was a joint winner of Scottish Business Achievement Award Trust in 1992; winner of the Service category award in the 1992 Corporate Elite Leadership Awards; received a Scotvec Fellowship Award in 1994 and Scottish Qualifications Authority Fellowship in 1997, and was awarded The Alick Buchanan-Smith Memorial Award for Personal Achievement in 1995.  Sir Ian also received the Corporate Elite "World Player" Award from the Business Insider in 1996.

In 1998 he was made a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers; in March 2000 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and, in the year 2001, he received the Business Ambassador for Scotland Award from the Scottish Business Insider.  In 2002 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Technology from Glasgow Caledonian University; he also received two awards from The Insider namely, the Business Achievement Award : Businessman; and the Insider Corporate Elite Leader of the Year Award.  In 2003 he won the Chief Executive of the Year Award from the Business Insider/PriceWaterhouse Coopers, and the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award for Business.   


John started what is now the Airlink Group (http://www.airlink.com/) as a hobby whilst at University. He has degrees in Accounts and Law. Airlink Security Park was the first company specialising in Airport Car Parking, it has enjoyed rapid growth year on year and Airlink Group is now the largest Scottish Car Park owner.

Whilst the group remains the dominant force in car parking in Scotland, its main activity is commercial property specialising in large warehousing complexes and industrial estates in close proximity to airports with over a million square feet of space. Other divisions of the group include Datastore that specialises in document storage and management, Warehousing and commercial storage, IT and Booking Agencies make up the other major sectors in the UK.

Airlink Group invests in all aspects of property development and partners with other investors in a variety of development and regeneration projects that have included an estate within Loch Lomond National Park, housing regeneration developments in towns and cities.

In January 2004 Airlink opened its first overseas office in Tallinn, Estonia to launch the first Scotland House, a not for profit trade house to encourage trade and investment between the Baltic States and Scotland, Scottish Capital a Baltic based venture capital fund followed this initiative and to date it has made investments in a handful of successful Estonian based companies. 

John is UK Vice Chairman of 'IAPRA' - The Independent Airport Park and Ride Association, Chairman of the sister organisation in Scotland, Member of the Strathclyde University Business School Council, the Paisley University Development Campaign Board and a keen supporter of the Schools Enterprise Initiative.

John has been a member of the Exchange since 1999, has enjoyed attending many events, learning from those who have made it, and trying to help companies that are just starting. In 2002 he was awarded the First 'Exchange Special Award' at the annual conference as the best supporting member. He has also presented and chaired events for the Exchange and currently serves as a member of the board.

John always says "In life you don't get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate".
