Tarak Ramzan

Tarak Ramzan is Managing Director of Kast Retail Ltd trading as Quiz and Tarak Manufacturing Co Ltd.  Tarak left University after his first year of Pharmacy to help his father manage Tarak Manufacturing Co Ltd. Tarak took over the running of the business from his father in 1981.  Prior to Tarak taking over at Tarak Manufacturing it was a small manufacturing company producing ladies tailored garments, employing approximately 25 people.  Throughout the 1980’s Tarak built up the company to employing 250 people with all the manufacturing being produced in the Glasgow factory and supplying most of the major retailers on the high street.

Towards the end of the 1980’s the writing was on the wall for clothing manufacturing in Britain and the turnover and profits started dropping.  Tarak set up some manufacturing bases in the Far East but with limited success, with the income stream still dropping further he decided to start Quiz as a retail chain selling young ladies fashion clothing in 1995.The company started with 3 shops in its first year and since then Tarak has grown the company into its present state of having 60 stores in most of the major shopping centres in the UK.  With more branches due to open over the next 6 months, there is an initial target of having 200 Quiz stores throughout the UK.  The company now employs just over 600 members of staff and is growing at a rate of 15 – 20% year on year.  Although the last few years have been tough on the high street, Quiz has undergone a major restructure with the cost base reduced.  With the restructure complete Quiz is now poised for the next phase of growth with another 10 branches in the UK to open in the next three months. Quiz has also opened 30 concessions in leading department stores throughout the UK and Ireland and there are more concessions planned to open this year.  Quiz has also opened an online transactional website which is showing tremendous growth.  www.quizclothing.co.uk  Another company Tarak International Ltd was formed with a view to Quiz becoming an international brand.  To date 31 franchise stores are open worldwide with further international outlets and concessions planned in the next 12 months including Russia and the USA.  Tarak’s ambition is to build Quiz into a major international brand and the foundations are being laid for the next stage of growth.

Tarak has also diversified successfully into property in one of his other companies, with future new projects planned.

He is also involved with several charity organisations and during his career he has mentored several start-up companies.

Tarak is an extremely enthusiastic entrepreneur, he believes that you must have a passion for whatever career you choose and you must have big ambitions.
