Speaker:  Mr Malcolm Phillips Mr John Scott

Malcolm Phillips was educated at Alan Glen’s School, the “Tec” and Glasgow University, after serving an Engineering apprenticeship in Harland & Wolff’s Shipyard and G & J Weirs.  He graduated in 1963 with ARCST and BSc in Mechanical Engineering and worked for John Young & Co, (Kelvinhaugh) Ltd for seven years before joining the Motherwell Bridge Group as Managing Director of the Plant Hire Company. In his 30 years with Motherwell Bridge Malcolm Phillips started 11 new companies, bought 10 and sold 21 companies generating over £60m for the Group. He retired from the Management Board of Motherwell Bridge Holdings 2 years ago to do an MBO of one of the Companies he had started.  He is currently the Chairman of Structural Composite Solutions Ltd and owns a 7 acre industrial development in Aberdeen.

John Scott of Scott Timber took over the family business at the youthful age of 18.   The company had incurred trading losses with a deficit of £50k but following his natural entrepreneurial instinct he set about identifying market opportunities that would save the business from failure and into a company with a predicted turnover for the current year expected to exceed £12m.
