Ron Hamilton is the 'inventor' of the one-day-disposable contact lens concept (wear for a day, then throw away). In 1994 he entered the UK market with the first one-day disposable contact lens. The business grew very rapidly and in 1996 was sold for $33million with another $15million subsequently being paid for Patent rights. Following a 5 year non-compete, and having decided retirement was not for him, Ron re-entered the contact lens market, launching a high specification contact lens, daysoft(r)uv, in April last year. Sixteen months on his new company, Provis, having developed new process technology, now exports over 70% of output to 14 countries and already has 100 employees. A further major increase in output will follow a recent £2million investment in state-of-the-art production equipment. Ron made a personal equity investment of £1.7million in Provis.
The Chairman for the evening will be John McGlynn, Chairman and Managing Director of the Airlink Group of Companies whose core divisions are car parking and commercial property development. His first company Airlink Security Park Ltd was founded in 1994 as a hobby whilst at University - specialising in off airport car parking, which has enjoyed rapid growth and has been categorised as one of the most successful business start ups in recent years in Renfrewshire. In 1996 JM Estates was added as a commercial property company which has had significant growth and will be launching a new business park beside Glasgow Airport later this year. 1999 saw the launch of Direct Parking (Glasgow Airport) which tripled the size of the off airport parking operations. As well as ongoing expansion in the core divisions, a new division in e-commerce to grasp the window of opportunity that exists is imminent.
