Ian Suttie is the Chief Executive of Orwell Group. In 1998, Ian Suttie led a management buy-out of the oil interests of his employer to form the Orwell Group. The company rents offshore equipment to large oil operators, investing heavily each year in new equipment to support the growth of the business and maintain its competitive advantage. Since the buy-out the group has grown substantially and now operates in 14 countries outside the UK with turnover expected to reach £80 million in 2001. Ian attributes the success of the business to building a team of highly motivated managers who have autonomy to develop their own business area. Expansion into the US market is a key objective for the company and in April 2001, it was confirmed that Orwell Group had been acquired by Weatherford International. Ian has now acquired a new business First Oil plc which has, and will continue to develop, a portfolio of oil acreage in the North Sea.
