After a career working in advertising agencies in Glasgow, London and Edinburgh, James Faulds, founded Faulds Advertising in 1985 as a start-up. The agency was consistently profitable and grew to be, and still is, Scotlandís largest. In 1993, James created The Faulds Group Ltd which eventually consisted of Navigator Responsive Advertising, a direct marketing agency; Redpath, a graphic design consultancy; The Glasgow Agency, a second advertising agency and Magellan, a new media consultancy. By 2001, The Faulds Group had grown to be the larges marketing services group operating outside of London. Its turnover was £40 million and net pre-tax profits exceeded £1 million annually. In profitability terms, The Faulds Group was the most successful company in its sector ever seen in Scotland. In December 2001, James sold his majority shareholding in the group to the management of each company in an MBO. As well as having taken on non-executive posts at Dunfermline Building Society and The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, he has expanded his portfolio by joining the boards of Careshare, Scotlandís larges group of private nurseries; Newell and Budge, Scotlandís leading IT consultants where James is Chariman, Wood Mackenzie, a world class research and strategy consultancy. James is also Chairman at i-Design, an innovative technology company who have developed software to enable advertising to be effectively broadcast on ATMs.
Mike Rutterford is one of Scotlandís entrepreneurs and business angels. He has been involved in a series of multi-million pound deals combined with a dossier of investments in UK start-up companies. His mission is to create a culture of entrepreneurial success in Scotland. His busy working life is spent between his dual roles as co-founder of Archangel Informal Investments and as a private investor, board member and advisor to a number of Scotlandís most promising technology companies. Archangel began in 1992, as a private informal investment house, co-founded with Barry Sealey. Over the last nine years, the syndicate has invested in approximately 50 start-up companies. Archangels has a list of 30 live investments in the field of technology, medical science, retail and manufacturing. Archangelís many investments include Data Discoveries, Waterside Television, Optos, Oregon Timber, Alpha Solway, Infinite Data Storage to name but a few. His angel investments today are dominated by various key projects. Currently he is a board member of Opto-Electronics firm Optos, a position he takes alongside Sealey as non-executive Chairman. Mike is also a Director of the Entrepreneurial Exchange.
