The Entrepreneurial Exchange

Biographies

Scott Allison

While Scott was busy gaining a BA Hons Marketing degree at Glasgow's Strathclyde University, he also founded his first business, Freedom Phones, having spotted the market opportunity for selling mobile phones online. He continued to grow this before and after graduation in 1999 and it grew into a profitable business specialising in advanced mobile phones, PC data cards and smartphones.

In early 2006, recognising the need for a specialist telecoms provider for small businesses, the company changed focus and became Access Business Communications and three additional shareholders came on board, bringing with them clients and expertise in the business marketplace; Scott's role as managing director was pivotal to the evolution of this business when in October 2008 the business was relaunched as abica. A powerful new brand was created and offered a fresh alternative to the big multinational telecoms players. Offering converged mobile, landline and broadband services to SMEs the business model focused on delivering contracted, recurring revenue with the intention of building these long-term and creating a substantial UK wide business.

As business telecoms is an incredibly competitive marketplace abica's focus and differentiator was on quality and service. Scott developed the team at abica and by October 2009 the turnover was at £1M and there were 12 staff. The investment in quality paid off when abica won the Glasgow Business Award for excellence in customer service. At the same time Scott decided to part company with his co-owners due to differing opinions on what the priorities should be going forward.

Scott is now looking for a fresh opportunity with a new business and is now also able to take on projects, consulting and non-executive work. As well as sitting on the board of The Entrepreneurial Exchange Scott is giving back by volunteering as an advisor to young start ups through the PSYBT.
