Mike Rutterford

Mike is a serial entrepreneur with a forty year career as business angel and investor. Born in Leith, Edinburgh in 1948 he was educated at Trinity Academy but didn’t grab the attention of the teachers. Instead, he spent term time buying and selling marbles in the school playground and then winning them back off his friends.

He showed an early skill for doing deals when at the age of 14 he arranged for Coca Cola to sponsor a dance at the local Masonic Hall and went on to sell 400 tickets. But he was anxious to see the world so joined the Merchant Navy and despite his academic shortfalls, he quickly mastered spherical trigonometry and calculus taught by a Sea Captain. He was keen to learn on the job and showed new found confidence. He returned to Edinburgh and to Leith where he had been raised by his mother and grandmother and decided to get back to business. He was a passionate salesman so started a business called Rutterford Ltd and started selling life insurance and mortgage products.

From there, housing sales beckoned as his friends, impressed at his sales techniques, asked him to try and sell their houses.  So he launched Stuart Wyse Ogilvie, the names carefully chosen from a directory in Births Marriages and Deaths as they conveyed the image of a distinguished business with a track record.

Within a year the business was trading in two shops, Comely Bank and Penicuik.  It was the late seventies and Rutterford was just ahead of the curve with one of the biggest housing booms on record.  His small team were creative and inventive and broke the mould in property sales.  He was the first to put “For Sale” and “Sold” signs on houses.  The rest of the market soon followed but after ten years and an initial investment of £6000 he sold the business for £16million to General Accident and made his first breakthrough. With the proceeds came other opportunities and while Rutterford continued with his first love for property deals, he was anxious to help others start up their own businesses.

In 1991 he co-founded the Archangel Syndicate with business partner Barry Sealey.   The syndicate is now almost twenty years old, has invested in almost 70 start up businesses and has a current portfolio of investments valued at around £80m.   Archangels currently manages a portfolio of 30 live investments in the field of technology, life science, opto-electronics and manufacturing.  Archangel’s many investments include Scotland’s most promising businesses; Arrayjet, CXR Biosciences, Data Discoveries, LAB 901, LUX Biotechnology, Optos, Oregon Timber, Reactec, Bloxx and Touch Bionics to name but a few.

It is in this role he has made his biggest impression on the Scottish business community, as an avid supporter of entrepreneurs in Scotland developing and growing businesses, and creating the culture of can-do.  He has been a committed member of the Entrepreneurial Exchange and served as a Director.  He talks passionately about Scotland’s natural ability to invent, innovate and create. Mike’s eye for first class property deals has also punctuated his career with regular success.  He was behind the master planning of the Edinburgh site now known as Caltongate, although he refers to it as New Street.   He is a partner in a vast area of prime land at New Ingliston and has recently launched a new development called Lothian Park for an 120 bed hotel and office development at the eastern gateway of the Bypass and East Lothian.   He has bought, redeveloped and sold countless prime Edinburgh office buildings, always improving them with his attention to detail and considered approach to regeneration.

He remains an avid sailor and is now the proud owner of his own 80 foot super yacht.  He is passionate about art, music and family and is a committed father and grandfather to four young children.   He lives in Edinburgh and spends his holiday time sailing the world with friends and business partners who know him for his devilish sense of humour and adventurous spirit. In June 2010, Mike received an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration from Edinburgh Napier University.

Barry Sealey, CBE

Barry was born in Bristol, educated in Gloucestershire and did National Service in the RAF. After graduating with a first class degree in Science and Engineering from Cambridge University, he spent his full-time working career with Christian Salvesen, starting as a trainee in 1958, and in 1981 becoming Group Managing Director.

He retired from that company in 1989 and has served as chairman or non-executive director of a number of companies. Over the last nineteen years he has been an active Business Angel providing, with others, investment, general advice and practical support to young companies.  He was co-founder of the Archangel Investment Syndicate which is the oldest and most active Business Angel group in Scotland, and which has since 1992 invested some £94m in over 100 companies, creating over 1,000 jobs. Between 1994 and 2002 he served as chairman of leading NHS Trusts in the Edinburgh area.
