Many businesses are considering offering shares to their employees as a tax efficient way to incentivise valuable staff. Has anyone any experience or views on how effective this is as a tool for engendering loyalty and effectiveness, particularly among the smaller business?

No. But would also welcome some feedback on the same subject. I am aware that Starbucks in the US started a very successful 'bean stock' share scheme that awarded staff a percentage of their salary in stock for every year they where with the company after their first 6 months employment.

I have very successfully used share options under the EMI scheme to not only motivate people to work for and stay with the company, but also to ease my cash flow - share options are valued by staff and reduce the often inflated salary demands that people now ask for. Happy to discuss how it works.
