McCOWANS, maker of famous Highland Toffee, has landed a contract to supply its new Vimto bon bon brand to Asda’s top 60 stores.
Managing director Alan McCafferty said he expected the workforce at McCowans’ Larbert plant to rise from 70 to over 100 following the deal.
'We also need to switch to 24-hour production within the next couple of months to produce the volumes associated with this valuable new work,' he said.
McCowans, which recently achieved British Retail Consortium accreditation, is also in talks with Morrisons and Woolworths as it bids to land further contracts from the multiples.
The Asda deal goes a long way towards paying for a buy-out of English sub-contracting bon bon manufacturer Ashbury Confectionery, that McCafferty and his team pulled off in May.
It enabled McCowans to deal direct with customers such as Asda, Cadbury and Safeway.
McCafferty and his business partner Ian Steven completed a £3m management buy-in last year to take over McCowans from then owner Phideas.
