Duncan Bannatyne 2008

Duncan BannatyneSerial entrepreneur, philanthropist, bestselling author and Dragons Den TV star, Duncan Bannatyne was born in Clydebank, where the memory of being told there was no money for ice cream spurred his entrepreneurial ambition.

Within a year, from knocking on doors he had a thriving newspaper round and bought his entire family an ice cream the following summer.

After a stint in the Navy he moved from one job to another, before making the decision that would begin the transformation of his life. He went back to ice cream, bought a van for £450 and then expanded the operation before selling the business for £28,000 and investing the cash in nursing home business, Quality Care Homes, and children's nursery chain, Just Learning. Eighteen years later he sold both businesses for £68million.

Since the sale he has expanded in health clubs, bars and property, recently acquiring 26 health clubs from Hilton Hotels, establishing the chain as the largest independent chain of Health Clubs.

He is also a household name from TV appearances in Mind of a Millionaire, Mind Your Own Business and Dragons' Den. He was awarded an OBE in recognition of his charity work in Romania and established his own charitable foundation in 2008 with a sizeable personal contribution to the fund.

He has also publicly added his support to the launch of Geared for Giving, a campaign to encourage UK business leaders to set up and promote a workplace giving scheme to benefit registered UK charities with tax effective donations through employees' pay.
