Jim and Joe Walker 2009

Jim and Joe WalkerJim and Joe Walker have built a deliciously iconic Scottish brand that is recognisable the world over.

Born in Elgin and brought up in Aberlour on Speyside, these two brothers were educated at Robert Gordon's College in Aberdeen before embarking upon their career in the family business.

At that time the firm had one small shop, a general bakery, producing a wide variety of traditional bakery products.  During the 1960s, the business expanded through the acquisition of other shops in Grantown-on-Spey, Elgin and Aviemore.  As the bakery developed, demand became more and more seasonal making it difficult to cope in busy times and challenging to maintain employment for their staff throughout the year.

A choice was made to focus on products that had a longer shelf life and that allowed for wider distribution.  In every case, quality was key critical and the products they chose to make were the finest available, made using only the very best ingredients. Before long these luxury products were being sold throughout Scotland and in the finest stores in the UK - Harrods, Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason. In the early 70s the company entered the export market for the first time and have never looked back.

The brothers have developed their family business from a local village bakery in Speyside to a truly international brand, spanning more than 80 overseas markets.  The workforce has grown from around 24 to 1,400, whilst the turnover has increased from £60,000 to more than £100 million, and the company now enjoys a share of approximately 50% of the UK shortbread market and approximately 70% of the export market.
