Tommy Dreelan 2008

Tommy DreelanAfter leaving school at 16 he began an apprenticeship in heating, ventilation and plumbing and combined this with night school to study for his HNC in mechanical engineering.

In 1977, he travelled to Aberdeen for an interview with Sedco Forex and was offered the post, but turned it down in favour of 16 weeks in France, training to become an oil service engineer with Dowell Schlumberger.

During the next seven-and-a-half years, he worked in various parts of the world latterly settling in Aberdeen.

He then branched out on his own in the northeast with oilfield service firm PSL in 1986, building the firm over the next 12 years, before its sale in 1998 to NWEP for £45.5m. He became a group board member, adviser and shareholder following the successful sale.

In 2001, along with his three brothers, he set up Qserv a specialist provider of well, process and pipeline services. By 2007 the company's turnover was almost £50 million annually and a deal was done with Aker Solutions in 2008 to allow Qserv to reach its full potential.

Retaining his position as managing director at Qserv, the company continues to focus on North Sea operations and plans to grow its international successes.
